How to complete the Lion Rock time trials

Complete the time trials for one of Hong Kong’s most iconic trails - Lion Rock! There are several routes which take you up to Lion Rock, however the Time Trial challenge will have you starting from Shatin Pass Road.

Thankfully you will only be timing the first 1.98km of the trail, and not the entirety of the walk - but don’t let that fool you! The steps can be quite challenging with a total elevation gain of 365m - so whether you’re in it to “win it” or just curious to see how you fare amongst other Trail Challenger users, read on to find out how to tackle this time trial.

Overview

Length: 1.98 kilometres

Elevation Gain: 365m

Difficulty: 3/5

To get to the start of the Lion Rock time trials, you will need to walk along the concrete Shatin Pass Road, past Fat Chong Temple. Once you see the “Lion Rock Country Park” sign, be sure to “Open Hike” for the Lion Rock Time Trials and hit “Start” before making your way along section 5 of the MacLehose trail. The initial climb eventually levels out, and you are treated to views over Kowloon.

There are a few other routes which connect to the trail along the way, so be sure to check your map periodically to ensure you don’t veer off track.

There are a few flat sections dotted along the trail, where you can catch your breath, and once you have passed Unicorn Ridge, you are treated to more stunning views - this time facing the North, overlooking the rolling hills towards New Territories.

Eventually you will start to make the ascent up some steps which seem to be never-ending, but this only marks the start of your incline towards Lion Rock - and the last leg of the time trials!

Once you reach the summit, the app will automatically record your time, and you now have the opportunity to revel in summiting one of Hong Kong’s most iconic hilltops.

Not only have you just earned yourself a free Lion Rock pin (promo ends 31st Jan 2023), but you can now take in the stunning 360 views of Hong Kong, and complete the rest of the trail at your own leisurely pace.

If you fancy another challenge, check out the other time trials or earn yourself a medal by completing a long trail via the app!
